PowerPoint has become a joke, LITERALLY, meaning presenters seem to refer to PowerPoint presentations as a stone-age way of presenting, as boring and trite, videos are all over YouTube aboout horrible PowerPoint presentations, and so on. The tool has taken the blame. But the TOOL is only that - a tool that can be used effectively or in a bad way. Here, in Rethinking PowerPoint, you learn how to use this tool PROPERLY to make presentations that boost your talk, add to your information, and never distract from what you are trying to convey. Quite the opposite. My all-time favorite tip is the one-word PowerPoint slide and how it can be so effective! (Just don't overuse it either...)

Match your message to your audience, not to every other PP presentation!, April 18, 2011

The reason I wanted to write this review for the most part is that I give presentations perhaps 3-4 times/weekly.

I give them both internally to my organization and to our clients. I am a trainer and PowerPoint to me is like a word processor to a writer or a worksheet to an Accountant.

I truly knew I needed help but didn't know where to begin. My PP presentations were always bland. I would spruce them up with fancy, animated graphics and it seemed almost as though they were received worse and not better. (Turns out that is true. My message was often lost in the glitz.) Rethinking Powerpoint taught me what now seems obvious: I need to match my message to my audience and match my presentation to my message. I wasn't doing that! This means thinking through "How can this slide best portray the message I want this audience to learn right now?" If that seems time-consuming, it is not; rather, it's like a 3-second thought process before I begin creating the next slide in my presentation and in doing that I am far more likely to make the slide work with me instead of being a distration from what I am teaching.

I would often just put all the test I was talking about on a slide. Why then did my audience even need me??? I would often fill a slide with fancy graphics - and unless I was teaching graphics design (which I don't do) then why would that help me train our clients on how to use our real estate software? The problem with PowerPoint is not, and never has been Powerpoint. The problem is with us who creates PP presentations. Rethinking Powerpoint describes how you can successfully make PP a helpful tool once again and not a distration from your message.

The best Microsoft Office compatible suite that I use on my own work laptop is the Kingsoft Office 2007 Free Personal suite version.

It is compatible with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint:

The installation file is stored in a zip file so you will need a program like Winzip or ExtractNow (which you can get from http://www.download.com) to unzip the file and extract the installation program for the Kingsoft Office 2007 Free Personal Edition.

I use the Kingsoft Office 2007 Free Edition suite on my own work laptop mainly because the menu interface for this suite is similar to Microsoft Office 2003 and so I find it easier to use.

Thickness?, May 28, 2004

Boy, this card is thin (still thicker than a regular sheet of paper). Nowhere on the package is the gauge (thickness) and if I knew what I know now I probably would not have purchased this.

Printing and seperating the cards was very easy though.

Professional Gorgeous Cards, July 12, 2006

These are GREAT. You can bleed off all four sides to create gorgeous full color cards on your ink jet printer. The only trick with the Microsoft Word template is to make a text box (insert menu > text box) that is larger than the table cell for each card so your graphics print beyond every edge. Or - make your own template in a design layout program. Then when you snap them apart - no white gaps. The paper is thick and the edges are crisp and clean.

I don't know what printers other people have, so be aware that I have an Epson Stylus Photo 785EPX. These cards work perfectly fine for me, I've never had a problem with alignment or anything like that.

The ink sets immediately, no smearing. The type is crisp like a laser printer. My colors turn out great.

Since this is a matte finish card, there isn't the professional glossy look, but that's what I wanted so I'm fine with that.

It's true these cards are not as thick as the super-professional ones like my husband got from his work, but then again they also paid a great deal more for their cards. For the cost of these, the thickness is fine.

The edges are clean cut. Personally, I can only barely tell there's perforations.

I felt like I got more than my money's worth for these cards. If I wanted a more professional look (like thicker cards, gloss), I'd naturally have to be willing to pay more.

Update (9/05): The newest cards I got were significantly thicker than the older ones I had. They're comparable to other business cards I've been receiving.

How about a discussion on bizarre foods of other countries, like insects, snakes hearts, raw things. Or about their dress culture, like some women in africa do not wash and put animal fat and dirt all over their body. Women who put those rings around their necks. The ones who put objects the size of a dinner plate in their bottom lip
